Did Chaz fake the cramp?

Yeah, it does look like he comes up with the idea to fake the cramp, doesn't it? Probably because his first dive was mediocre and Jason topped him with an excellent dive. Maybe he felt he couldn't beat Jason.
Thats how I interpreted it too. -

I took it to mean that since he was shaken up because the girl had chosen Jason, then he had a bad first dive, and Jason had a great first dive, he probably felt he wasn't going to do well anyway, so he was making an excuse, and in the process hoping to sabotage Jason's chances to even continue and have a good second dive and look like a hero.
And it provided a vehicle in the plot to let Rodney substitute for him. -

I always thought that Chaz either faked the cramp, or it was really lousy acting. There are a couple of things about the idea of his faking the cramp that don't make sense to me, though. First, Chaz is very competitive, and arrogant to boot. I would think he'd be more confident in his own abilities than Jason's, and would therefore be hesitant to fake a cramp to give Jason (or anyone else, for that matter) a chance to make the winning dive.
Second, it seems as though if the writers wanted us to believe Chaz was faking, they really should have put something in the dialogue about it, i.e., "Looks like it's all riding on you now, Melon." It could very well be editing, but I didn't see enough plotting in Chaz's face or anything to indicate that he was throwing the dive on purpose.
That said, though, the only other conclusion is that the guy was doing some really crappy acting. That could be it, too. -

He faked it. There are some factors you're not taking into account. Grand Lakes has always lost at the dive meets. As the coach told Thornton when they first met, he's setting the record for most consecutive losses. And it's a team sport, not individual. Chaz was hearing how Jason was putting the team back into contention there and after his own bad dive thought that if he couldn't lead the team to its first victory in ages, he wasn't going to let Jason be the hero of the meet. He faked cramps so he could back out and the team would forfeit since they didn't have any substitutes. He didn't know the coach would call on Thornton, who would do the Triple Lindy, so both Melons led the team to the win.

Yes, he was faking it. He did a mediocre dive earlier, and Jason did a good one. He was a show-off, and an arrogant one to boot. He didn't want to look like a fool and have everyone blame him if he did another bad dive and the team lost the meet. Also, it goes back to something Valerie said earlier to him when he complained about Jason blowing the dive and causing them to lose: "Haven't you ever messed up?" To which he replied, "No." very smugly. This was karma biting him in the ass.
Also, it was to set up Thornton to dive!
