      It's run by politics and giving people credit for other performances that were ignored rather than actually honoring the best. They rarely get anything right. The fact that "2001: ASO" lost to "Oliver!" in 1968 says it all.

        Sometimes they get it right, sometimes they get it wrong, and sometimes it's just a lifetime achievement award to compensate all the other times the person has lost. I think Scorsese has the record in the area.

          Yes it's bitter-sweet also that when they eventually gave Scorsese his richly-deserved Oscar it was for an overrated movie that's one of the weakest in his cannon. Clearly an 'apology Oscar' like Newman's.
