Seeing what Hollywood has done lately, the character of David will probably be re-written so that he is 16 years old and will be played by a 22-year-old actor.

That's exactly what I was thinking too. It would be just typical of Hollywood (and, in particular, Disney which are big fans of silly teeny booper crap) to have David being a teenager. It's a shame because this film worked best having him being only twelve years old. He was still very much a kid who needs his parents so it emphasised how much the world had moved on without him and how no-one could really help him.

I'm glad this movie is getting a remake. But ONLY if it is done properly. I'd like to see a remake that is true to the story of the original, but updated with todays computer graphics capabilities, and possibly a slightly more modern story. The voice of Max, I hope will be played by the same actor who did the original. Since he is still alive, I don't see the reason NOT to include him.

I once (in 2006) started writing this story that made some references to this movie. In it, my character discovers a girl who died in 1995 and comes back in 2006 as a ghost not realizing that she's dead and that 11 years have passed. Before I realize she's a ghost, but after I realize how long she's been gone for, I tell her that maybe she was abducted by aliens. Another scene involves her being surprised that we again have a George Bush as president and again fighting a war in Iraq. Also, there is this scene where I drive her to the mall and turn on the radio. It's on a classical station and doesn't like it. I switch to a station that's playing Barry Manilow and she asks me to change it immediately. Then I switch to a station playing Sheryl Crow's "All I Wanna Do" (a hit from right before 1995) and she starts singing along with it at the top of her lungs. This is an obvious reference to the Beach Boys scene in Flight of the Navigator. Maybe they could have something like that in the remake, but minus the kid being a ghost.

What they should do is just not remake it.

How about doing a reverse version that's a sequel rather than a remake/reboot? Max comes back in 2011 to find David, who's now a father. They have to go back to 1978 to fix something in the past, sort of Back to the Future style. For child appeal, David's son also tags along after finding out about his father's amazing past. Since a lot of people hated the Pee Wee Herman voice, Max doesn't have it anymore, having matured in the last 25 years.
