They capture the tone of the first half of this movie and keep it throughout. Don't get me wrong, I like this movie but the second half gets "very disney" and silly. The first half is very Spielberg'ish and is set up so well. Its very mysterious and dramatic. The music is so perfect. They also need some good acting with relatively unknown actors/actresses. Cramer's performance as David is so good and genuine. Thoughts?

I know exactly what you mean. You remember the scene where he walks across the railway tracks at night? The stars and the whole mood of that scene just makes me feel all like a kid again, makes it feel like Close Encounters almost.
It reminds me a lot of Explorers - great first half, disappointing second half.

If they remade this movie they need to keep the same time period and keep pee wee as the voice. .. Maybe.. Get jj Abrams to direct. Maybe

I feel the way you do about keeping the same time period, but why even remake it, then? I think we're telling ourselves that we're happy with the film the way it is. What about a spin off movie set around the same time, in the same universe but with different characters? I want to see more of Flight of the Navigator, but like you, I don't want a 2016 version.

I also agree that the First half of the film was better than the second
As mentioned, the "Spielberg'ish" tone of the first half was classic, and mysterious. This needs to be the main direction taken in the remake.
I do believe the child, and audience, should, again, not be aware of the ship or time travel until after David is trying to get in to his house. The whole "what is going on here" was a truly a great part of the first half of the film.
While, I do agree with toning down the "Disney" and "Silly" tone of the second half of the original film I still think there should be a bit of fun there, so the child and Artificial Intelligence can bond together. The original friendship worked during the final scenes of the film, where Max was concerned for David's safety in taking him back to 1978, and the goodbye they gave each other. Much like the ending of E.T. It worked then, and still does now too One of my favorite scenes from the original movie was when David learned to fly the ship, and tuned in the radio station to the Beach Boys and just had fun flying the ship for a few minutes, before it got serious again. There needs to be a moment like that again. The rest of the jokes and stuff can go, but having fun flying the alien ship must stay Its a nice high point before the big dramatic ending scenes begins.
Many other movies tend to be a product of their time, or have such specific events or characters that remakes tend to flop, because they are just so different And while the original movie still holds up after all the years, I do believe that a remake could still be very good. The key elements were about a child abducted by aliens and returned years later without aging, so he is "Out Of Time". The child has to deal the events and concepts of a new time period. The government gets involved, and becomes the "So Called" Villain of the story. He and the spaceship then need each other to get away from them. And the child seeks a normal life with his parents.
I just hope that moviegoers will give it an honest chance and rate their reviews based on the key elements I mentioned, and not because"This scene" or "that character" was not in the new movie So many people constantly say that "This Movie" sucked because it was not like the original Well, then you might as well just watch the original in the first place. There is no point in remaking a film, exactly like the original. There has to be different things about it. Not to mention, this is no longer 1986A lot of the original film, is dated to 1986 So I'll be real curious to see how they update things for it taking place in "2016"which is going to happen, so we all should just accept it now!
But they better at least try keep the original basic spaceship design the same. That was just so good the first time around! There is no reason to change things too much there!

This film doesn't need a remake; it's fine the way it is.
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.
