Yeah, there are some great 'fun' war movies, but in trying to nail down a definition of war film that's pertinent to this film I think
anti-war film
is a whole nother thing.
These are my top five anti-war films:
5. The Pianist (Polanski, 2002)
4. La Grande Illusion (Renoir, 1937)
3. Das Boot (Petersen, 1981)
2. Grave of the Fireflies (Takahata, 1988)- The Human Condition (Kobayashi, 1959/61)

I agree with everybody's selections almost, but I won't quibble. These are my favorite alternatives that are nonetheless war movies and are sublimely super.
