Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Invaders from Mars

I read a couple threads. I mean I guess I saw the original at some point and I can see complaining that this isn't a true remake, but yeah it still creeps me out.
I think people are confused about the "campiness" of it. It's clearly being told from the perspective of a little kid. The story the dialog everything. You know how you'll rewatch a movie from when you were a kid and it's totally lame? This isn't like that. It's clear and simple the way I remembered it. I remember even having nightmares about this film after seeing it when I was like 7. You'll notice all the dialog is the way a kid would imagine it. "Great scott hasn't anyone got a penny!!?". Everything is straight out of a kid's dream after staying up reading too many EC comics. For me this is a true blue nostalgia film.
I watched Super 8 a while back and I think you can really compare the two on what to do and not do in a nostalgia film. Super is a clean bland generic monster movie trying to mimic the old ones where as Invaders takes the original and literally filters it from the perspective of a little kid. Everything about it screams "this is what scares little kids." Gah catching your creepy mean teacher eating a frog? Holycow.
Regardless yeah from film aficionados and the like sure it's nothing like the original I'm totally behind you. As a gen-x who grew up with the 80's films this feels like coming home. makes me want to pull my Weird Science books out of the closet.

I agree with you 100%. I first watched this movie in the 1990's on WPIX 11, and it creeped me out, but I got the best of it.I LOVED IT! I perchasef the DVD about 4 years ago from a little CD and DVD store. Yeah, not too many of those bad boys left. It was my first time seeing the movie in over 10 years. I even forgot about the movie.
I watched it one Sathrday afternoon and it really made me have that nostalgic feeling. You know, back in the days when cable was still rather small and you was still able to watch a decent movie on a local channel.
Same can be said about Super 8. I went to a late showing of the movie with a friend, and honestly, I really didnt want to see it, but i realy got into the movie. It was a HUGE break from the super hero special effect mumbo jumbo that is popular. I think me and my friend had a nostagic moment like going to the theatre in your small town and watching the latest sci-fi movie. It was like being a kid and having fun.
And thats what I really enjoyed about the movie because its not anything to take TOO serious. Its creepy, and has surprising moments, and sometimes a happy ending. People take movies WAY too serious nowadays where we are all critics. Just sit and watch the damn movie, and enjoy!!! Lol

I thought Super 8 ok. I wouldn't totally poop on it, but I went in with high expectations of something totally different after watching the trailers.
Same I had no clue what it(invaders) was I was just playing netflix for background noise and when I realized what it was that movie from when we were kids I had to drop everything and start it from the beginning. Reminded me a lot of ET which was the inspiration for super 8 as well. Now netflix needs to add the "Explorers"!
