We were on a very tight budget. I was only 6 at the time as well.

I did. Twice. The second time with friends, who loved it as much as their kids did. And then I bought the VHS, and the soundtrack. I didn't care it was for kids, I saw it because of Bowie. I still love it.

I faintly remember watching it in theatres when I was six. I was so worried about a scary scene coming up since it was one of the first 'dark' kid movies I watched. But as a fan of the muppets, I always loved the movie.

I was 6 or 7 at the time and we settled on Karate Kid Part 2. Having watched it last night in honor of David Bowie, I looked at the numbers and they were up against STIFF competition like Ferris Bueller, Back to School, Ruthless People, and Top Gun. When it hit cable, I watched this all the time.

because the only film on my radar in 86 at the age of 6 was Transformers The Movie which I also ended up not seeing too (thanks to some jehovah witness group that temporarily brain washed my Mum at the time).

I vividly remember seeing this movie in a theater when I was 5. I loved it, but then I also remember watching Siskel and Ebert pan the movie that night, and I couldn't understand why. They both made rather tedious criticisms of the movie's fantasy logic and thin plot, whereas the real appeal of this movie lies in the surface elements like its setting and Bowie's classic performance. I think older viewers at the time were turned off by the weird juxtaposition of adult and children's themes (i.e. 40 year old Bowie spends the entire movie trying to seduce 15 year old Jennifer Connelly, but there are Muppets everywhere). Ultimately this is a movie best appreciated with repeat viewings over a long period of time. It means different things at different ages. That's why it's a cult classic that did better on video (and now streaming) than it did in theaters.

Siskel and Ebert panned Return to Oz too, which I don't adore quite as much as Labyrinth (without Labyrinth's pop music to lighten to mood, Return to Oz is perhaps just a
tad
too dark). They even expressed unrestrained glee on the news that Return to Oz was doing poorly at the box-office, saying they wanted to see the film fail.
It seemed they had an issue with 1980s 'kids' fantasy movies'. -

I was 10, and while we went to the movies, we didn't go all the time. But, my mother rented it (Beta!!) and we watched it that way.

I was eight at the time and I really wanted to see it but Mum took us all to "Three Amigos" instead I don't think she thought much of David Bowie

I DID watch it. I was 12 at the time and I both watched the movie in a theatre and played the computer game on my C64
As to why it wasn't a hit in theatres I don't know, probably it was too dark for most kids and too much of a children's movie for many adults.
It remains a great movie and luckily it seems to have found its audience over the years. -

I was 10 at the time, and I don't remember us kids being pressured into seeing everything in the theaters. Most of the time, we would just watch the movies at home on VHS. My family didn't have a VCR, but other kids did, so I'd see the movies at birthday parties.
I had the Labyrinth game, the one where the ball has to be rolled through the maze. It was tricky, but I finally got it.Jim Hutton (1934-79) & Ellery Queen -

I must have been about 11 at the time. I saw it and loved it.
But at the time, I would have seen anything by Henson.
I do recall most of my friends not being very interested.
I think Adults and teenagers probably saw it as a kids movie and younger kids might have been scared.

I never even heard of it until I saw it on some HBO equivalent at my uncle's house in the late 80's or early 90's. I grew up watching The Dark Crystal about 10,000 times, so I don't know how this escaped my attention. Perhaps the advertising at the time wasn't very good. Anyway, it's a definite contender for my favorite movie of all time.

I actually saw it in the theaters back in 1986. I was 13 at the time and was obsessed with everything sci-fi and fantasy. I guess I was the target audience and I remember liking the movie a lot and the song Underground was on heavy rotation on MTV. I even remember talking about it with friends about our favourite scenes and the lot.

Antonio you were a kid in the right era i was too Young, 80s was ok but the 90s with the action, sci-fi, fantasy, good comedies that was the era of films !!!
