There's actually an uplifting scene at the end when we see the surviving children leaving the village. We realize they are going to replenish the tribe eventually, thus the Guarani will live on. I think that's what Joffe is trying to tell us.

I felt depressed every time I finished watching a musical. I tell you, it's unsettling stuff.
