When Gordie goes into the the store and the clerk starts talking about how his brother played football and all, and then he asks Gordie what he does and he just replies " I don't know".. what does he mean by that?

The store clerks question to Gordie is presented in a way of comparison with his brother, not a true personal interest in what Gordie has to offer. Gordie knows this, he knows the context of the question but really doesn't know how to respond to it.
It's another example of the loss he has suffered and compounds his fathers feelings about him vs the dead brother.
