Well, they could've postponed VOY. TNG was still very popular. I would've rather seen an 8th season of TNG than the movies.
X-Men: Apocalypse 8/10. TMNT: Out of the Shadows 9/10. RIP Doris Roberts. You were wonderful in ELR. -

I was just going to watch one of the movies but my stupid DVD player ducks. I have to get a new one ASAP.
I was going to watch some of season 3, but I put the disc in and realized that instill remembered the episodes too well.
I guess I have to stay with Don Matteo for a few more years.

Because of the bible it says there will be seven fat years and then seven meagre years so they had the fat years with TNG and they were not going to risk for seven meagre years with Star Trek until they released VOY.

As I understand it, budget.
Each season, the actors either receive or negotiate a pay raise, over time, this becomes a larger portion of the budget and eventually becomes unfeasible to maintain. (more to the actors, less to actual production)
This was a major issue with Stargate:SG-1. The original plan was to end SG-1 with O'Neill's departure and start a sequel series called Stargate:Command. This would introduce the new characters and more political feel of the show while simultaneously resetting the actor's pay grades. This ultimately didn't happen and I think to the franchise's hindrance, as it would have also allowed the series to welcome new viewers who didn't want to slog through the previous 8 seasons just to get up to speed.

Envisioning a 7 year run for any series seems incredibly problematic.
Seven of Nine.
Any coincidence?
(Then again, showing two more seasons of nothing more than Jeri Ryan's spectacular breasts would be better than a lot of shows airing on tv!!!) -

Based on ratings then YES but it def had way more competition then TNG did at the time. And i'm sure Paramount were still milking way more then they put into the show, despite the ratings not being as high as TNG.

What do you mean better competition? Cause Next Gen was up against Cheers, The Cosby Show, the first few seasons of Seinfeld, The Golden Girls, Wonder Years. Some of the most popular, successful shows of all time.
RIP Matt Roberts. You were great. -

From what I read somewhere that all the cast where ready to continue for an 8th Season except for Patrick Stewart.
At some point early during production of Season 7 Paramount wanted to kick start a TNG film after again rejecting the Star Trek Academy film idea.
TNG ratings were doing really well even on the seventh season if Paramount didn't push for the films we might have ended up with 10 seasons of TNG.
