I was held by this movie from start to finish. Not blown away or ranking this as a favorite or anything, but it was solid entertainment. I feel like I've been going through tons of movies this past year and am getting to the point where most of them bore me. So, the ones that actually catch/hold my attention stand out more.
The parts with DeNiro really did draw me in, so, kudos to him and his acting skillz for that. And Mickey Rourke in his prime was just so cute and charming in a scrappy wayso it was nice that it was him we were going on this ride with.
I saw some little clips before watching it, so I already figured out that Johnny was Harry and DeNiro was satan and all that. I didn't guess the whole sacrifice/human soul stealing thing though. While watching the whole thing I was thinking that Johnny had just sold his soul before the war, then got amnesia and honestly forgot who he'd been. And Lucifer wasn't 100% sure but was hoping to trigger the memories by forcing Harry to track 'Johnny' down etc. not that he'd stolen a soul to dodge the contract and the devil was making him remember who he really was. But anyway, I was still interested just to see it played out and obviously didn't guess it all.
I found some of it confusing, some muddy aspects that weren't really answered (or maybe would be if I watched it again), and maybe some of that was done by design like, what was with his chicken phobia? I thought that would tie back to a curse or something. And I saw someone else on here askwhat would happen to Harold Angel's soul? And was Johnny driving the ship at all or was it all Harold? (I feel for most the movie it really was Harold's mind/memories and not Johnny realizing it was himself). And how evil was Johnny reallyI guess he was a bad dude because Lisa Bonet said her mom said he was close to pure evil. I suppose that could be because he'd already sold his soul, thoughstill somewhat unclear. So some of that was confusing, as was the drop off in Time's Square and all.
But at the end of the day, still drew me in and was entertaining. Had its creepy elements and whatnot and kept me guessing. And I do like the concept of someone trying to get out of the "contract" with the devil and the devil tracking him down/messing with him.

He hated chickens because they reminded him of Johnny's old voodoo days. Yeah it's a great film - it can be hard to swallow whole on first viewing, but it haunts you and you gradually have an urge to watch it again, and it becomes fun to re-bask in its atmosphere and find new details.
