Great movie. One thing in particular that caught my attention was the almost constant smoking of Mickey Rourke. The cigarettes he smoked were the unfiltered Camel cigarettes, which are some of the strongest and most "classical" cigarettes out there. I wonder if Camel made any financial contribution to this movie.
When I first saw this movie years ago I was a smoker myself and I remember it definitely boosted my appetite to smoke. Especially given how cool Mickey Rourke looked when he had a cigarette hanging in his mouth or between his fingers. Even now, having mostly given up smoking, I must confess that this movie made me want to light one up. Parents should probably keep their children away from this movie for this reason.

AH pretty much has all the classic film noir elements, and you can't have a film noir without lots of smoking.
Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

              That's it in one sentence.

During this time 1950 - 1960 unfiltered Plains were the only smokes that Camel were selling. Camel Filters and Lights only came much later 60's, 70's and 1980's
"More Doctors smoke Camel than any other cigarette" from a 1940's magazine advert

Not positive, but I think at the time this movie takes places, Marlboro, Winston, Viceroy, Kool, Kent, and Tarreyton were the only filtered cigarettes. Kent was the only "light" cigarette back then and had that asbestos filter.

Being a smoker myself, I can totally relate with that. Another movie I'd like to add here is
                      Out Of The Past
                      .
