Do you think the way he was treated pushed him over the edge or do you think he still would have done the murder/suicide if everyone would have been nicer and treated him with respect?

The first scenario without a doubt. Joker tried to be nice to him. I think he was the only one.
In no way, should Leonard have been made/allowed to train for the Marines. He was not equipped for it, mentally, emotionally, physically, psychologically, spiritually and the list goes on.
If it were necessary that he contribute in some way, he could have worked in the kitchen preparing meals or something like that.

I agree whole heartedly. It was not in his nature and he was broken down and reprogrammed to be something that ended up malfunctioned.
I'm not sure if this would be a realistic scenario, because there would have been many enlisted men who weren't capable or could cut the mustard. That is the point of training. I wouldn't be able to do it and I would refuse to do it.

They would have to execute me for cowardice….
Plus due to homophobia, it was seen as far more immoral to admit to being a fag than being willing to pump another human being full of lead or blow them to smithereens. Such absurd preposterous breeder mentalities…..

That was the theme of another Kubrick film, Paths of Glory. Excellent film, but upsetting as all get out.

I've only watched that once. It makes me angry seeing all the military hypocrisy and bureaucracy in place and all about elitist agendas again and to save face.

I dont get why they would do that to him, he may be the difference between life and death one day, you do not want him or any of your team to have a grudge against you.
And what were they even mad about? that his suckyness got them all doing **** they dont wanna do? Dude it is the army, it sucks, and I am pretty sure the drill sergeant would have found an excuse to punish them all for something anyway.

Well Matthew Modine is no John Winger. Things could have been a whole lot different if Bill Murray was there to give Leonard the confidence to become a lean mean fighting machine!
