Legacy Is Eternal while Platoon is pretty much forgotten

i think Full Metal Jacket is pretty flawed; the two parts don't seem connected at all and the first part is by far the best. the documentary style of the Vietnam part is awkward and only picks up once the sniper shows up, and Adam Baldwin takes charge…
but it has an eternal legacy and is a very popular cult film while the Oscar winning blockbuster Platoon is hardly mentioned: it's like Goodfellas compared to the movie that beat it for Best Picture and Director, Dances with Wolves…
it's usually the cult movies that last, which is why they're cult movies…
Platoon had the distinction of being written and directed directly to the screen by a Vietnam vet, but somehow it felt like one of the most contrived war movies ever with the good sergeant with the halo and the bad one with the devil horns surrounding the young newbie…
anyhow… even when going back to really old pictures, with exceptions there are many blockbuster oscar winners that aren't remembered much at all… and if one comes to mind, that's not the one I'm referring to…
