SOME guys DID wear eyeliner in the 80s mostly celebs or club kids but I don't think RDJ was wearing it in this movie. I've always thought that he's one of those guys with gorgeous eyes and lashes and he just looks like he's wearing eye makeup. Jim Edmonds kind of has the same look.

it you recall the scene where Clay rescues Julian and they are driving in the car, Julian's eyeliner is running because he'd been crying. it was very pronouced in the movie that he wears it on and off.

Really, a lot of guys wore eyeliner in the 80s. I was just a young kid, but I remember going to the mall with my mom all the time, and seeing all these boys wearing makeup and thinking it was weird. Very confusing for a little kid, lol! It was common enough that I remember it very well to this day.

Prince had us wearing all kind of schitt that we wouldn't even think about now. Clubbing in the 80's, eyeliner, long trench coats and lots of leather. ladies were lovin' it. got much tail.

I wouldn't say it was common per se, but it was definitely a thing in the 80s around LA. It started in the early 70s glam scene and carried over into punk, and then it spread out a bit further to kids who listened to KROQ dreck like The Cure and Depeche Mode I forget what they called that scene. (edit: New Romantic/NuRo I guess) Of course it became a huge thing again with the hair metal glam pt. II scene, but that has nothing to do with Julian wearing it in the movie.
Anyway, if you think it didn't happen at all, you don't have a clue. -

even if i see some men in club-scene STILL wearin'it so yep it is still "cool"why not.
i do not care 1 way or the other.

Wearing mascara back then was not common, altough LA was a strange place. I do remember the scene that looks like some makeup is running, and I'm sure it was, but it was probably an error in filming. The mascara was probably not supposed to be a character trait, but only to make actor Downey Jr. look strung out. They put the makeup on him to give his eye's the tired and hollowed out look of a junkie and didn't catch the little smear that appeared during filming, and if they saw it during editing they probably weren't going to ask for a reshoot on a movie that likely had a limited budget considering the controversy it was causing.

I agree. His makeup was part of the culture he was involved in the clubs, the high-end parties, etc. I mean, of course it wasn't mainstream stuff, but there were plenty of circles where it was normal for guys to want to look like someone from The Cure.

There was an androgyny thing going on in the 80s; at least among musicians. Think of all those girly-looking hair bands like Poison, Prince, etc. Not saying you wouldn't get your butt kicked in high school, but I can see that being the norm in LA night life.
