To find out Defense secrets that Brice may have told her.

I'm going to say Soviet Union. Not that SU was ever an abbreviation that was really ever used. USSR was the intended term, I think.
The fact that someone has to wonder what someone else's made-up term for the Soviet Union means is a good thing, though (because it doesn't exist anymore, and stuff).

While watching the movie we don't know that Farrell is a Russian spy trying to leverage over Brice! So we don't understand his motivation to save the kid on the ship
he saved the kid on the ship and got his name in the paper.
then he gets assigned to Brice and all is well.
When he meets Susan it is icing on the cake. Susan will tell him things and he can get brice to reveal secrets.
Farrell was not in love with Susan but I am sure he liked her and there was no reason for her to die. It sure made a mess of Tom's life and agenda.

So, you're saying his motivation for saving a kid on his ship, was to get famous and be noticed by the Secretary of Defense?
Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

Did you watch this film? He was in love with her. He even told his handlers after he was back in his homeland that he did love her.
The truth of life has been revealed.

Yes, he was definitely in love with herunintended, but it happened.
No, he never returned to the homeland. He met his handlers in an apartment in DC, and they attempted to get him to return to Moscow, he refused and left.
It is fun to think what might have happened with Tom/Yuri. After all, he now had sway over one of the most powerful men in the world, who offered him "anything he wanted" at least a half dozen times. As a Russian mole, would he have taken advantage of this situation? Did he get disenchanted with his role as a Russkie spy, and just settle down in the US? WHo knowsthe fact remains, he was still a military officer, and you can't just 'quit'.

Is my take off on this? I thought that it was just a wild coincidence that the Costner character happened to fall in love with the woman who was also boinking Hackman's character. I thought he was genuinely surprised when she told him about Brice. Also, if it was always Costner's plan to cozy up to this quasi prostitute just to get info, why would he have been jealous? You'd think he'd be more like "Really, Brice is coming over tonight? Well, I'll just slip out of here. You two have a GREAT time tonight!"

No it was not a coincidence, he deliberately set out to have an affair with Susan he even says to his Russian handler "You wanted me to be her lover, I was her lover" it was all planned, his falling in love with her just happened it wasn't part of the plan. That's why he was jealous, he didn't want her seeing Brice anymore and Susan says she will end it with him.
