    Definetly bittersweet.

A bit of both but more heartwarming than anything.

Both, which I think was how it was supposed to come off. Candy's early death and the freeze frame on his face to end the movie does lend it a little extra sadness.

I've always felt that way about that scene: the music playing and the last pause shot of John Candy smiling. I alway that if a video tribute was made about John Candy, that would be the last shot.

Like other said, both. It's sad because Del has to see all the family and love Neal has and not to mention, seeing Neal and his wife embrace, probably killing Del on the inside, due to losing his wife. At the same time, maybe a little heartwarming in that we see Del look kind of down initially, but then looks up and smiles, as if he's decided he can still smile and be happy, despite what he's lost in the past.

Definitely heartwarming, Neil has shown real growth, compassion for someone like Del which, I think, would have been impossible before the trip. Del has some place to be for thanksgiving for the first time in a long time.

Growth? Come on now, I doubt there's a one of us here who would have wanted anything to do with Del, we all would have reacted as Neil did, Del was annoying, cost Neil a cab, mooched on the room, etc. Yes, after several more adventures we learn the guys whole story, but be serious, how many of us would embrace an annoying stranger with open arms right off the bat?

Neal was a tightwad jackass who makes bad judgments until Del entered his life and through their adventure Neal learned a little about humility.

Name one thing he did that would make him a tightwad.

How was he not humble at the start of the film?

                          1. His whole plane was to get him before 8 pm that same day, he tried bribing someone for a cab.
                          2. After being delayed for bad weather, he gets in a huff because he won't get home until 10 pmWOW BIG INCONVIENCE!
                          3. On the plane he cops an attitude because he got bumped out of FIRST CLASS, which he told he would get a refund for.
                          4. All along the way, he made snide remarks and comments about anything that wasn't up to his standards.

                            1. Uh, yeah, he wanted to get home and see his family on Thanksgiving - what a jerk. I'd say paying $75 for a cab (especially in the 80's) is hardly something a tightwad would do.
                            2. A huff? The guy was bummed, everyone is when their flight is delayed, especially after a long day at work, losing a cab, and not having seen your family for a few days, and it's a holiday.
                            3. He got upset that he was bumped, again, who wouldn't, and the woman was very rude, a refund is not the point, there's a reason you pay for 1st class.
                            4. Huh? So let me make sure I understand you here:
*A guy takes his socks off on a plane and his feet stink to high heaven - you're fine with that?
*A guy uses every towel in the bathroom and leaves you none (after you paid for the room and the cab) - you'd be fine with that?
*A guy spills beer all over your side of the bed - you'd be fine with that?
*A guy starts clearing his nose as you're trying to sleep - OK by you?
*A rental company rents you a car that is not there - OK by you?
*The bus runs off and you have to walk back, and when you get there the woman is ignoring you to take a personal call - OK by you?
*You get robbed of all your cash and are upset, so you're tightwad?
*Without your permission, a guy rents a car with your credit card, gets it scratched up, lights it on fire, you're upset so you're a tightwad?
That's not even covering everything, just a few things, I think you need to go watch the movie again.

Bingo!, jsn_hylnd!! I was just thinking humanity and humility after watching the movie yet again. I know this was just movie but I firmly believe if everyone experiences a touch of humanity and humility, the world as we know would be a nicer place 🙂

I think everyone who lives in Neal's house is delighted that Del came. For one thing, that shower curtain is at last going to stay up.

Del is still alive. That's one of the saddest endings in movie history, if you ask me.

Till John Candy's death, I always viewed it as a heartwarming scene.. Del finally has an actually friend, someone who cares about him and can help him move forward But now it's just sad, I always think about John Candy not being here anymore..
