He probably just played himself. I've read that Dawson, in real life, was a huge butt head. For a lack of better words lol.

Dawson was a great choice because he was basically playing himself. I don't think any one could have done it better.

You're absolutely right. I can't think of anyone that could replace Dawson in that movie. And it's the subtle nuances he brought to the roll as well. E.G. The pinky out when he's talking on the phone. "Pipe that feed in here" and the he points with his thumb, pinky and index finger haha. Who does that??? Lol And the exchanges between him and Arnold were pure gold.

To answer your question, Devil worshipers do. They do it to signify that they worship the beast and to place a curse on someone when they point it at somebody.
This is a pretty occult film. Like the all-seeing eye on the movie poster.

Yup. Dawson played it better than anyone else could have. He was pretty much playing himself, which is why it worked so well.
