Speaking as an immense fan of the origingal book, I completely agree with Ed norton and Clive Owen if they want to go with more of a name actor. Cillian Murphy is also an awesome choice. I feel like he'd get into the "scrappiness" that's required of Richards.
For some reason, the last few times I've read the book I've always pictured Michael Shannon as Ben Richards. He's really an odd actor, and I doubt they would ever cast him, but in the book he's supposed to look like he's been through the wringer a couple of times and you need an actor who is interesting to watch even when he's by himself on screen for long periods of time.
Writing that, I realized that would make the suggestion of Ryan Reynolds not half bad considering his performance in Buried.
On a similar note, judging from his work in Moon, I think Sam Rockwell would be an awesome Ben Richards, especially when rocking the anti-establishment vibe

Will Smith is the only actor that comes to mind

my choice: Adrien Brody, he has already done one former arnold vehicle in Predators and could pull this off as well and I always thought they should get Arnold back for the Killian part.
Of course it is best if it's not remade at all, but I have a hunch that it will eventually.

Yes, I agree with #3 and #5. But without the changes. And you're right about Edward Norton.

Arnie was great because he had the muscles AND he had a funny delivery of one-liners. This is a huge part of his appeal. The only person that can pull this off now is Statham.
