If you only look at it from the perspective that he called her "Aunt" then yes, it's disgusting. But if you look at it the way it really is then he didn't sleep with his aunt.
First of all, relatively speaking she's not his aunt, but rather a cousin. Plus, neither her nor Howard were related by blood and technically not even legally. His mother's cousin Helen married Howard's half-sister's nephew. If the nephew came from the parent of Howard's sister that wasn't his parent, then technically Brantly's family wasn't even related by blood. That's more of an adopted family, where you and the rest of society consider you family (legal or otherwise) when in fact no ties (legal or blood) exists.
The fact that he called him "Uncle" Howard wasn't accurate. That's a relationship that would only exist on any level if he was a sib of one of his parents, which he wasn't. If anything he was cousin, but technically he wasn't even that.
So no, him sleeping with Vera wasn't disgusting. -

Listen, yeah she was kind of a skank; but she stripped him naked in the pool, nature took over and what happened happened. I'd do it too if I were in his shoes. Oh wait a minute, he was naked. Well all you guys know what I mean.

Still gross. You can split hairs about bloodlines etc., but the fact remains that they are (or were) related, even if by marriage. This is, as it should be, taboo.
When life rolls you a 7-10 split, aim for that 7 pin and let 'er rip -

Brilliant, so if you have sex with your brother's wife's sister it's wrong and immoral is it? People don't seem to understand..well, life here. If there's no blood link with someone, they are in no way connected to you in any immediate family sense for christs sake.
Don't be moronic.
Plus, as someone pointed out, it's a film ffs. -

Tough talk Ratinho, but your argument is false ffs. You don't need a blood link to be related, and that's the point ffs. Adoptive parents and step-parents do not have a blood link to their children, but it IS still wrong for them to have sex the children, right?

What planet are you on? No, you don't need a blood link to be related, but his mother's "cousin Ellen married his half-sister's nephew" and you equate this having sex with his aunt?
You and I must be related then.
You just have to be resigned-
You're crashing by design -

It is real. Do you know how much people date thier cousins. In the bible, Isaac (son of Abraham and very great ancestor of Jesus Christ) married his cousin. (Abraham's brother's daughter) If this was wrong, do you think that the Lord would have chosen Mary and Joseph who had an ancestry similiar to this. Besides, Brantley and Vera were not even that closely related. Didn't we all come from the same two people Adam and Eve. Did not thier children all marry and reproduce. (in case you're confused, despite the focus on Cain and Abel, the bible says there were many others)
Anyway, that woman was his exact age and was freaking fine, if it was not sinful to have sex before marriage, I would have done the same thing, probably even better than Brantley did.
