Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Superman IV: The Quest for Peace

I intended to watch it for 10 minutes for a laugh, but ended up sticking around for the entire thing.
It's been years since I've seen it, but time has been strangely kind to this film. Don't get me wrong, it's still terrible by any stretch of the imagination, BUT it has now visibly aged to the point where it's more in line (visually) with the first three films, giving it a kind of "pseudo-classic" feel.
And all the returning players do good to great work here, especially Gene Hackman and of course, Christopher Reeve, the greatest cinematic Superman of all time.

What about the newcomers like Lenny and Nuclear Man?

They were fine. I thought Nuclear Man made for a sufficiently menacing villain (those crazy lightning fingernails!), and Lenny was over the top, but so was Otis. Although Jon Cryer is no Ned Beatty.

I've always had a soft spot for this one. It's actually the third film that took time to grow on me, and now I like that one as well. There's obvious problems, like sloppy story telling, some bad visual effects, but good model effects, actors, and Nuclear Man is a genuine threat to Superman, despite the public's opinion of him. I wish he would be rebooted into the comics, and drop the whole solar powered angle.

That's true. He's the only villain to successfully defeat Superman. Superman would have been dead if it weren't for that green crystal.

It's not a 'great' movie but it has a certain odd charm, I think is fun to watch - I find it's faults (dated, low budget, lots of scenes cut out, MILTON KEYNES!) kinda endearing and make it interesting
