So bad it boggles the mind

Yes, Freddy Got Fingered is awful, simply awful. However, and this is not meant to be a defense of FGF per se, but a few scenes made me laugh so I simply can't put it below the hideously awful Who's That Girl. To this day, this line makes me cringe (I may be paraphrasing a bit):
Actor: "What's his name?"
Madonna: "Louden"
Actor: "Louden Who"?
Madonna: "Clear"
Ahhhhhhh!!!! Burn it!!! -

Its pretty bad, but sadly to say, there's many films that are more wretched.
The Hitcher II, Sleepwalkers, Natural Born Killers, Pulp Fiction, Watchers, Alien 3, Nell, Premonition, Apocalypto, Halloween H20, North Country, Maximum Overdrive, and Jumanji
come to mind.

As a kid, I found this film mildly amusing. But even then, as big a fan of Madonna as I was, I still wondered why in the world she made this!
Madonna was on the top of her game when this film was released, why oh why would she make such a godawful movie??
I don't blame Griffin Dunne for agreeing to it, he was a lesser-known actor plus anything Madonna touched then was gold.
But apparently, it didn't work out that way. For all intents & purposes, we never heard or saw Griffin Dunne again.

Look at the number of acting credits he has since 1987. I don't think anyone's been asking 'Whatever happened to him?' -

Yes he may have been acting, but his name nor face was never really 'popular' again.
He may have done this deliberately, who knows. But even Griffin himself looked uncomfortable in this film, and he likely thought it would be a springboard to popularity.

I got the impression you felt this godawful movie killed Dunne's career. You said yourself he was a lesser known actor, so how popular could he have been?
His most well-known role was American Werewolf six years earlier. It wasn't some blockbuster that made him a household name. Even After Hours didn't make him instantly recognizable.
I think it was just a job for him, and he was probably very well paid for it.
But never heard or seen again is a lot different than 'not as popular.'
