is because Michael Keaton plays Daryl as totally unsympathetic and general a-hole as you would expect an addict to be. The clinching scene on his a-hole-ness was calling up his mother to get a 2nd mortgage. I mean have some decency man.

Yeah, Daryl isn't a likable guy at all throughout most of this film. It's only when he owned up to being an addict and took accountability for his actions that I felt some sympathy for Daryl period.
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.
