I mean, calling his mother on the phone and basically asked her, "hi mum, can you take a 2nd mortgage and give me $30,000 of it? And please give it to me before you die."
This guy has some serious issues on top of his drug addiction. -

In addition to what jjjones said, long term addiction changes people psychologically, so they will do things they wouldn't normally do if they were not addicts. He was at the end of his rope, but he couldn't see how wrong it was asking his mother for money, even to their detriment. No sober person who is in their right mind would ever do such a thing to a parent.

In addition to substance abusers, I can also see how someone with a gambling addiction might do such a thing to a parent unjustly to somehow "right their wrongs" but in actuality cover their gambling debts. Gambling is a serious addiction too and that is exactly what Daryl did with the company money.
