Did anyone here see Dangerous Liaisons in 1988? If so what was it like?

I can honestly say that this was an incredible experience
I think that I may have seen it seven times at the theater
Unfortunately it may very well have influenced me during my most influential years as a young man
I was teenager when it came out
so it was basically like the teens experiences of Cruel Intentions today
I was absolutely mesmerized by all aspects of the movie the first time
I enjoyed it
The second time, I was able to follow who was who and then the detailed aspects of the games being played became absolutely additcting with each viewing
Now of course, I loved Michelle Pfieffer. And John Malkovich became an instant All Time Great just from this performance alone. And then there is Glenn Close. All three will hold a special place for me forever now as actors.
The dance that is the dialogue in this movie can be watched over and over just like you listen to your favorite song over and over.
Malkovich's manipulative words and how he completly toyed with Pfieffer. unbelievable.
Again, this is probably not the best movie for a teenager to fall in love with. Because it is the ultimate in how to control and play with the opposite sex. But wow. It is awesome.
And it is so incredibly funny in the most subtle ways.
When Tourvel basically tells Valmont that he has spent his whole life not being worthy and being a danger to be close tofor a brief moment, the slightest smile comes across Malkovich's face because he was quite proud of that true statement and found it to be a suh-weet insult.
The puns and mischevious back and forth was incredible.
The entire elementary games that are played with the the children are sick, twisted, and wonderful.
And hey, I still think to myself that mantra just like Merteuil's one simple principle, "win or die"
Oh it's not healthy, true, but you do get what you settle for in this life

Yes, I did, and it was as great a cinematic experience as it is nowadays. I've just watched it for what must have been the 5th or 6th time and I'm always enthralled and always find a little detail that went unnoticed in previous viewings. This film has everything perfect: cast, costume, dialogue, acting, directing, etc. The opening scene, with both JM and GC looking into the mirror, which is the camera (meaning US) is a gem. This is a film about stripping of one's mask and, as such, should touch most people in a number of different ways.
Watch it a few times, is my suggestion to all of you.

This is excellent advice. I've watched it several times over the years, and am always amazed at the little things I pick up with each viewing - things that take on a different meaning, haven't noticed before, etc. Each viewing seems to bring something new. -

One of the very few movies in my life that I have ever walked out of. After a half hour of watching this film, I had no idea who was who or what was going on. I heard people in the theater laughing and had no idea what they were laughing about. I absolutely hate movies or tv shows that I am unable to follow, so I just gave up and walked out. I've never bothered to try and watch it again. A truly horrible experience. If I was rating this movie, I'd give it a zero! I don't understand how anyone could follow this movie.. too complex.

Yes, I watched it in 1988. I dragged my then boyfriend (now husband), and I loved it. He, not so much. But he pretended to, bless him.
John Malkovich was very attractive, but I think almost any man is sexy in 18th century clothing.
