Before Bruce Willis was cast, the script was sent to Clint Eastwood who sent it back with "I don't get the humor" written accross the front. That seems strange. It's not like the movie was based on a New Yorker cartoon, I think the humor is pretty easy to follow and Eastwood has been in movies with simular humor (macho one-liners). It perplexes me that he wouldn't get it.

I can see him as the terrorist but not as the cop doing all those stunts.
      Not his style.

I would have liked to have seen Eastwood in Rickman's role. Has he ever played the bad guy?

He did play a real life based drug smuggler in the recent movie called "Mule."
And he was The Outlaw Josey Wales as well as on the other side of the law in Thunderbolt and Alcatraz.
As a bad guy that you wanna root against?
          I dunno.

Those guys were in a sense anti-heroes, not so much full on fledged evil bad guys. They had moral motivation even if the lines were blurred and the same could be said for his character in man with no name trilogy.

              My point exactly.
He was in a lot of early TV stuff so I dunno if he played an out and out bad guy in any of those.

The humor is really only born out of the predicament and Willis's own personality and if Eastwood had starred in it, it would have likely been drier and more laconic. The dynamic would have been different.
Its not really a humorous film due to the situation and bloody violence perpetrated in the proceedings, but circumstantial due to the practicality of McClane's ability to think his situation through and while ott in some scenarios, Willis pulls it off to make his character seem real enough.
Eastwood was too old anyway and may have just used the humor aspect as an excuse to renege.

I wouldn't call it a renege; as far as I know, he never agreed to it in the first place.

                    Perhaps so, he declined.

I love Eastwood but he could not play John McClane.
John McClane is a screw up. His apartment is probably filthy. Cat throw up everywhere. He's probably a chain smoking alcoholic. He doesn't have everything under control but he has a "fck it" attitude supplemented by wit and dry humor.
                      I can relate.
A young Clint could have been slightly humorous if he wanted but not a true relatable "Joe next door" like Bruce Willis.
                      Bruce is John McClane.

If CE was JM he would have gone in there as Dirty Harry, blown them all away with his hand canon, and movie over in five minutes!
                        LOL

I agree, I can't see anyone other than BW playing McClane.

                            was originally supposed to play

That was back when it was still a sequel to The Detective. I'm talking about after they rewrote it to give it its own seperate continuity.
