sinatra, because the original novel was written by the same guy who wrote the tony rome stories and Sinatra's original contract from the 70's said he had first dibs on any lead role from that author.

Frank Sinatra was once offered a role in Die Hard!

              The Detective (1968 film)

Frank Sinatra played Detective Joe Leland from the novel "The Detective" by Roderick Thorp. Thorp wrote a sequel ("Nothing Lasts Forever") in which Leland is trapped in a Claxxon Oil Corporation skyscraper after it's taken by German terrorists, and must rescue his daughter and grandchildren. Twenty years later the novel was filmed with some changes: the daughter became his wife, Claxxon became the Nakatomi Corporation, and Joe Leland's name was changed to John McClane. The film was released under the title
              Die Hard
(1988). Because of a clause in Sinatra's contract for "The Detective", which gave him the right to reprise his role in a sequel, he was actually the first person offered the McClane role, even though he was 73 years old at the time. Also, coincidentally, Bruce Willis (who played McClane) made his movie debut in The First Deadly Sin (1980), walking out of a bar as Sinatra walked into it. Additionally, Lloyd Bochner played Dr. Wendell Roberts in this movie. His son, Hart Bochner, played Harry Ellis in

              Very odd…
              axlotl926 March 2004:
So I was looking for the novel "Nobody Lives Forever" by Roderick Thorp, after seeing "
              Die Hard
", the movie based on it. I discovered that "Nobody Lives Forever" was the sequel to "The Detective." So I ended up reading them both… and then discovered that "The Detective" had also been made into a film. So I looked for it , finally found it on late-night TV, and watched it.
Good grief, this movie is a mess. Gotta say that Frank Sinatra did a remarkably good job as Detective Leland, but everyone else seems to be phoning it in. (Then again, perhaps I might have a different opinion if I weren't so sleep-deprived.)
What might be really fun is showing "The Detective" and "
              Die Hard
" sequentially, as an illustration of changes in cinematic technique over 2 decades. Can you imagine Bruce Willis in "The Detective"? Not I. Similarly, it's hard to imagine the Chairman of the Board in "
              Die Hard
". And yet the two novels were sequential…
