She wore some of the most drab and dowdy clothes ever put on film. April Ferry is a great costume designer but I didn't like the blah wardrobe that she dressed McGovern in and she a very beautiful lady and someone like her you don't put in dowdy clothing.

remember the wedding dress at the begging. a high element of the nastyness of the naffness that was 1980's fashion. seriously i can't see a picture from the 1980's without cringing

That was typical 80s fashion, oversized, and conservative. Too bad because Elizabeth McGovern had such a cute figure.

I don't know what you were wearing, but not all 80's clothing were conservative or drab like that.

Well I sure wasn't wearing the skanky stuff that Alec Baldwin's slutty chic was wearing.

I hated her puffball bob hair-do too.

She was cute but those long skirts and sweaters with a butterfly collar shirt underneath made her look like a school marm. She didn't even wear shorts around the house or at the barbecue. Just jeans and a sweatshirt with the sleeves pushed up. Could this be conservative 80s fashion or from her being raised in a conservative house judging by her father?

I agree, not all 80s clothes was drab and conservative. There was some nice clothes at the dance club. I have no understanding why the designer went with those choices.

Just a guess here, but maybe it was because Kristy was supposed to represent everything Jake feareddrab and conservative, as you pointed out. Everything about his life was closing in on him with that inevitability. He even saw it in her. Since most of the movie actually showed his illusions and fantasies, maybe that was one too.
