Seemed like they just lived in freaking squalor. Infections due to not changing bandages, etcthe nursing staff didn't seem to even care.was it that bad & worse? Any testimonies from Vietnam vets?

I'm sure they weren't pleasant, but Oliver Stone has exaggerated the truth in many of his films.
Oliver was very angry, to say the least, about Americans attitude toward Vietnam vets. Considering he was in a horrible massacre on New Year's Day 1968 that the last firefight in Platoon was based on and there was no media coverage on it

In reality, I doubt they were that bad. In the movie, however, I'm sure the deplorable conditions they were in didn't help ease Kovic's suffering.

Utter hogwash. Although VA hospital facilities weren't fancy, they were immaculate, well-equipped and well-staffed. During my two hospitalizations for malaria in 1970, I was treated with professionalism and kindness by every doctor, nurse and technician I encountered. Those who rant to the contrary don't know what they're talking about.

Well then, I guess you'd have to take it up with Ron Kovic himself. He said the squalor and filth of the VA facilities were unimaginable and you had to see it to believe it. I'm just going by what he wrote in the book. Unless of course, you think he is lying or exaggerating.
My father-in-law was a WWII vet and partially paralyzed and also confined to VA hospitals and nursing homes for the last ten years of his life. I have to say my description would not match your experience. Though I'm glad you had a happy one.
