80's kids movie? Help

This one is a long shot. I used to watch a movie as a kid (I'm 35 now) but unsure exactly how young I was. I believe it was a North American film or TV movie.
The main characters were 3 kids, possibly 4. All I can remember are some scenes set in a boat-yard or similar and toward the end one of the kids is locked in a room by the protagonist and used an axe to break a hole in the door to escape. I think this kid was maybe overweight? The room was in a small store or something, there was a stack of jars of molasses on the front steps which were referred to for whatever reason.
I think the movie was fairly recent at the time so perhaps late 70's or early 80's but not certain. I have exhausted all lists etc trying to find it. Not expecting a solve on this but thanks in advance!
