Exactly. I cannot believe the number of people who rarely watch or comment on something I watch on television, and conversely I can't understand their fascination with any of the "Wives of (City)" or whatever its called, or the Bachelor and Bachelorete programs, or basically any of the prime-time situation-comedies, or the fascination with any programming on MTV dealing with topics such as 16 and pregnant, I mean, why make a show about youngsters whose brains haven't stopped growing yet they've made a life-changing decision to bring a child into the world when there's no father or household or means of income.
Anyhow, this was an awesome irrespective of all the geographic and historical inaccuracies.
Something else that interests me that I would like to see added to IMDB: I notice an inordinate number of Goofs in "Glory" including anachronisms like 'small child wearing a digital watch on side of the road'. I would like to see an actual JPEG of it on IMDB, and would also like to see GIFs added, for example (something I just paused the movie "Glory" for so I could catch it) the 'squib' that was attached to Matthew Broderick when his character was shot during the final scene. Yep, you can clearly see the cable running up his leg that was used to detonate the squib and produce the blood.
I'll contact IMDB, perhaps they'll allow this addition at some point.

It was quite popular when it was in theaters.

Those living below the Mason Dixon line most likely don't like the movie. I loved the movie when I saw in the theater and never fail to watch it on cable. A word of advise to the haters of the movie: Look away! Look away! Look away Dixieland!

I live below the Mason Dixon line and I can honestly say this is my favorite, and in my opinion the best, civil war movie ever made. It really pulls at the heart strings. Everyone from the south is not racist. That's like saying everyone from the north are stuck up a-holes.

I have been a movie fan for 40 years and this film never came on my radar, nor was it ever shown on British TV, so I can see what the OP meant about 'not popular'. Also the profit on the film is on the low side (gross $26m, cost $18m) suggesting it didn't get a big popular runs in theatres as similarly expensive blockbuster war films.
I only found this movie when searching out all imdb highly rated movies on Amazon and Netflix, which I did before these lists were on the web for all. It takes a time to warm up as a movie but it is really gripping and dramatic. Amazing to see Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman and Andre Braugher acting off each other.
Also before watching this movie, as a Brit I had naively thought that, at time of the war, everyone from the North was anti-slavery and everyone from South was pro-slavery. But the movie shows it was not as simple as that, there was racial prejudice on both sides, and of course I hadn't realised that the Union soldiers may actually resent anyone who is black because without them, they would not have to fight in the first place.

I certainly prefer this to The Birth of a Nation or Gone With the Wind.

This Texas history teacher loves this movie and shows it to my students. Your comment was ignorant and unnecessary.

As others mentioned, wasn't marketed well. I never watched it until one of my U.S. history professors showed it to us in class. I would say it is one of my favorite movies of all time.

I think the subject matter is too heavy for some people. They want escapist entertainment that doesn't require any thought, nor the possibility of becoming emotionally attached to a character or plot. Others avoid movies like this because it might force them to take stock of themselves and their personal beliefs/morals. Others don't enjoy watching the horrors of war. Finally, some just don't like good movies. 😄

It was ignored by the Academy for the major awards because it had a majority black cast.

So let me get this straightyour claim is that they ignored it by nominating it for awards and by giving it awards.
                                      Is that correct?
