Jake taylor, is more mike lieberthal or brad asmus than pudge
and pedro cerrano albert belle is ok except belle was a very good hitter
What about heyward and Don mattingley. Hes got the handlebar mustache and all

Mitch Williams himself claimed that he wore 99 (when
Major League
came out in 1989, Williams was w/ the Cubs and he wore #28) because his favorite NFL player was Mark Gastineau. The similarities between him and Rick Vaughn were purely coincidental. -

Eddie Harris reminded me most of Gaylord Perry
Haywood, I thought, looked a lot like Thurman Munson, Cerrano reminded me of David Ortiz (although I know the movie was made about a decade before Ortiz showed up in the majors). -

Manager Lou Brown was played by the late James Gammon. I thought Gammon resembled Sparky Lyle. Lyle is best known for his career as a relief pitcher. He managed for many years, but not at the major league level.
Willie Mays Hayes didn't make me think of Ricky Henderson until the sequel, when he wanted to become a home run hitter.
Pedro Cerrano reminded me of Rico Carty. Carty was a slugger who played in the '60s and '70s. He couldn't hit curve balls or play defense. But he was Dominican, not Cuban. I don't know if he practiced voodoo, but he was very difficult in the clubhouse. The Atlanta Braves traded him because he fought with Hank Aaron and Ron Reed. He even played for the Cleveland Indians from 1974 to 1977. -

Willie Mays Hayes reminded me of Willie Wilson his rookie year with the Kansas City Royals. He was faster than greased lightning, but barely hit his weight. In 1978 in 127 games he had just 198 at bats while batting .217. Despite his limited playing time, he finished fifth in the American League with 46 stolen bases. I remember a veteran player saying something like "he can't steal first base" about Wilson.

I also see some Jim Leyland in Lou Brown. Both have the gruff smokers voice and are baseball lifers. (except when they work at a tire store)
Lou Brown is Jim Fregosi through and through which is uncanny because this movie came out 4 years before the unlikely Phillies of 1993 but that Phillies team and the Indians of this movie were so similar it's scary. Look at the comparisons of the 2 teams:
CF-Lenny Dykstra/Willie Mays Hays: Dykstra was a roided out freak by then but in the beginning of their careers, both were skinny speedsters.
3B-Dave Hollins/Roger Dorn: Both decent hitters who were average fielders at best(I'm being kind calling Dorn an average fielder). Hollins wasn't a top paid player either.
C-Darren Daulton/Jake Taylor: The only similarities they have is that they're both catchers with 2 bad knees but who were good field generals. Don't know how many years Taylor would have had at this point but Daulton, believe it or not, was a 10 year veteran in 1993(he first came up during the Phillies 1983 World Series run).
P-Mitch Williams/Ricky Vaughn: The big difference being Williams was a reliever and Vaughn a starter but both were colorful personalities who had some control problems.
P-Larry Anderson/Eddie Harris: Elder statesmen on each team but Anderson was a reliever and Harris a starter but both had colorful personalities.
Mgr-Jim Fregosi/Lou Brown: Both were plucked from the proverbial scrap heap(Fregosi was a color commentator for the Phillies while Brown owned a tire shop) who were brought in to manage a collection of has beens, never was', and never will be's who managed to make both winners.
I don't see any other team who comes close to this fictional Indians team. -
