I thought the Yankees had a rule where everyone had to be clean shaven

The Yankees would've won nothing in the 70's if they hadn't bought Catfish Hunter and Reggie Jackson. What a joke of a franchise, buying a title isn't the same thing as creating a team from scratch that wins 3 consecutive titles, cluck the spankees.
Catfish had a stache as did Goose Gossage, one the most famous mustaches of all time next to Rolly Fingers. -

Every team signs free agents, get over it. It's a sport, the GM's job is to put together a winning team. If your team can't do that it's not the Yankee's fault.
Name one championship team in the past 30 years who have had ONLY homegrown talent in the roster. -

IIRC only the Reds had a no facial hair policy. The Yankees had Munson, Hunter, Reggie Jackson, Mattingly, among others who were mustachioed. As for the Monty Burns/Mattingly sideburn thing, this was born of a real issue Mattingly had with Steinbrenner.
