Last night we watched this movie for the first time in years, and when they were holding the baby up at the end I said to my husband that the baby looked like she had down's syndrome. I figured it just happened to be the baby that they used.

I've seen this movie many times, and I've enjoyed it every single time.
I also cry every single time, after Helen gives birth and everyone is kissing and hugging, lol.
But, from the very first time I saw this movie, I also believed the new baby of Gil and Karen had Down's Syndrome.
Her eyes looked slanted to me, and that is probably the #1 physical sign of babies with Down's.

this is me exactly. have seen this so many times. starting when i was in my late twenties and trying for four years to conceive. cried every time i watched. and without any blink of an eye, always thought of Gil and Karens baby as having Down's. Also, I always try and get the chronology straightKaren had announced she was pregnant, due in February. Julie had announced as well. But their baby looks like a newborn and Karen's looks about 6 months old, then there is Helen just giving birth and Susan is hugely pregnantLove the sentiment and don't let it spoil the emotions of the ending for me but can never wrap my brain around how it all unfolded in a timeline(P.S. love Keanu Reeves in this!)

If they didn't make a point of it then the baby wasn't supposed to have it.

Exactly. They would have pointed that out. And lots of babies look like they have downs for part of their babyhood.

Just watched the movie for the first time in years, and that baby definitely looks like one with Downs. I felt no doubt, particularly since Karen was then shown looking at the new baby born and getting a little emotional in a sad way. Her face was sad yet Gil "geed her up" and she smiled again.
She had said she liked life being a roller coaster, and having a baby with challenges would perfectly fit the bearing-out of that.

i never noticed but it could be right-i always thought karen was just crying with happiness at all the new babies in the family-not because her child had downs

She was crying with happiness, whether her newborn had Downs or not. Are you kidding me? she was an exceptional woman and would not have been so shallow as to cry because her child was born with a disability.

crying when you find your child has a disability is not shallow. How dare you.

I am not a troll, but I believe in them since I see them every day on IMDB.

I just finished watching the movie and I never once thought that baby looked like he had down's. I've seen the movie multiple times and never thought that.

I come from a family rife with Down's Syndrome - many 1st, 2nd, and third cousins have it - their child did not look like it had Down's Syndrom, at all. Just rewatched the movie today and even though I saw the movie hen it first cwme out (sans kids), I've since seen it numerous times and it still cracke me up, and I still cry at the final scene. Wonderful movie.

That was my question the first time I saw the movie. After subsequent viewings, I've concluded the baby does have Down's. It makes perfect sense her parents would be a bit wistful.

I just watched this movie again for the umteenth time and it doesn't look to me like the baby had Down's at all. If Wiest's character is crying, it's bacause she is happy. And Mary Stienbergen's character is the same way. Everyone is happy and grateful for what they have.
How sad, that you were not born in my time, nor I, in yours.

Lots of babies look like they have downs at some point in their early development. It has to be confirmed upon noticing other symptoms. If the baby had downs, they would've pointed it out. I remember people saying that about Suri Cruise, tooI have a nephew with Down's, when you see them for yourself, up close and often, you can see that this baby in the movie doesn't have Down's

First of all, it's Down Syndrome, not Down's Syndrome or Downs Syndrome. Second, they show the baby for all of a few seconds. It's impossible to tell. I don't see anything in that baby that might look like DS.
