    What's sad about it?
Some people enjoy their independence, social lives, eardrums and sanity. Punishing yourself by becoming a parent is not compulsory.

True. Those people often make (big part of) their careers in family movies.

Wow, I think you're my new hero. I completely agree!! Sad is when people have no mind of their own and allow society to dictate their life.

Just "sad" that he is able to play such a loving, caring father that it's a shame that no child will ever benefit from his genuine demeanor. That's regardless of Steve's personal choice to have children. I get the whole desire to not have kids (I have zero). Just seems like a wasted, good parent.

So your parents (and every one of their direct ancestors) had no "mind
of their own", and only the childless can be free of society's dictates? By this reasoning, Thomas More, Martin Luther, Shakespeare, Gallilieo, Mark Twain, Tolstoy, and Charles Darwin (to name a few) were spineless, impressionable gullibles, and nobody has ever had a reason for reproducing the species apart from appeasing social pressure.
Do you feel the same way about marriage? What about friendship, the use of language, cooperation, and employment?

Because being single without kids is the only way to achieve that stuff, clearly.

Maybe he doesn't like children. Just because you can have them doesn't mean you should. Children are not for everyone.

Steven is a good actor, but I don't think he's much like the characters he plays.

Well Pryor did once call him the one legit character among the comedians of the time.

Well who knows what his reasons for not becoming a father is but he has worked with plenty of Children in his career. Just look at movies like The Man with Two Brains ,A Small Twist of Fate, and Cheaper by the Dozen for example. He may not want to have them but he certainly seems to have no qualms about working with them. Maybe he doesnt dislike kids so much as he just likes having his own lifestyle and not wanting to have the burden of responsibility that parenthood brings. If so thats his choice and hes welcome to it. Not wanting to be a parent doesnt automatically equate a dislike or though it may often be the case.

Always I get this thing when people take actors so seriously they are just like puppets.
They talk about actors making line up, but writers write the movies, directors, producers,
editors, etc make the movie the actors are just the face of the movie, and they get way
                                too much credit.
I think Steve Martin is kind of a creep. He made lots of money and turned into a real right-
wing jerk the Jerk. Oh well, life is too short. This is a good movie, and the series is even
better. They have to find someone to play the part so Martin is as good as any.
Martin has a kid at 67 when the kid graduates high school he will be 85 could even
be dead how good of a parent is that?

He's such a nice guy. I actually met him as a teenager. He was on break right before he did the movie Grand Canyon. He was so sweet and kind to me. We were on vacation and I was trying to figure out how to use a video camera I got for my birthday. He had just bought the same one. He took the time to teach me how to use it. He was so casual too.
What I remember most was when I first looked at him I said "Aren't you Steve Martin?" He replied "What do you think?" I said "I think you are." He smiled and told me I was right. He casually commented on the camera and told my parents bought me a nice one. He wished me happy birthday. I told him I couldn't figure it out so he started to show me. We spent about 30mins together. I wasn't sure if I should bring up his acting because I was sure most people did that all the time. But I told him I enjoyed watching him on SNL reruns and wish he was on more episodes. We then talked about where we were vacationing. He asked if I had ever been to the Grand Canyon and told me he was filming a movie about it. I told him no but it sounded like a cool movie. I actually thought it was a documentary. lol He then said he had to go. I thanked him for his help. I never thought of asking for his autograph or to video a picture of us together or anything. It was all so casual.
My parents never believe me. lol I honestly wondered if it was real myself. Many year later I was with my parents and we walked passed some DVDs on sale. One was Grand Canyon. I have yet to see it. I picked up and said "Hey, this is what Steve Martin told me about when we met." My dad was with me and said "You mean it really happened?" I looked at him like he was nuts and told him I always told him I met him. He seemed shocked but said he believed me now. lol
Anyway, he was a cool guy. Remembered me of a dad or an uncle. I mean who takes time out of his day to help a random teen with a video camera? He was just a regular guy.
