I've never found it to be that scary. Scariest scenes for me:

    1. When Kipp sees her in the cemetery outside of the utility shed at Eel Marsh House.
    2. When Kipp goes into the nursery.

It's scary if you're 10. It had me screaming and traumatized when I was 8, and I was afraid to watch it when I found the film again at 20.
However, once I did I laughed at myself. Her face looks completely human and very disappointing. Even her makeup sucks. They should have made her paler, older and more dead looking. She just looks like any other woman just with bigger eye bulbs.

It's not scary at all. And I didnt know she was going to appear suddenly.

I'll agree with this. It scared me when she first appeared, but by the end of the scene it seemed overdone.
A laugh can be a very powerful thing. Why, sometimes in life, it's the only weapon we have.

If you don't know it's there, and don't think about it too much - hell yes!
A lot of emphasis is put on that scene on these message boards. But that's not what the film is about. It builds the tension up wonderfully, for her inevitable appearance in the conclusion.

No, not really. But it depends on what scares you. It didn't scare me.

                    SPOILERS
I thought it was easily the scariest bit of the whole thing. It's so well done: Kidd looking up in horror as this massive shadow arises before him and then THAT face being unrelentingly forced on the viewer for far longer than most "shock" moments on film. You get such a sense of her overwhelming rage and hatred - I practically fell off my chair!
Impaled on my Nobel Peace Prize- how ironic.

The builld-up to that scene is intensly scary, brilliantly done. However, I think they did a mistake in changing her appearance, she should have looked like in the other scenes. As it is, she looks like a halloween witch.
I find the scenes by the cemetaries and the nursery far more frightening.

Like someone mentioned here before, I think the scene is very effective. However, I just think it's a little too long, agree? The first shot of her above him in the bed are stunning, but I think it all could do better without that close-up that follows, if I remember it right.
The unexpected and sudden is basically the key ingredient in delivering shock, and to this day, this scene could be one of the best shock-inducing scenes of all time.

When you're 10? years old at the time, yes, it is scary, heh
But by todays standards, not so much.

Watched the woman in black yesterday first time and didnt know anything about the movie. Pretty laid back haunted atmosphere through the film but then that bed scene came and damn it scared me. i screamed like a little girl. Someone said here that it was little too long and I agree. By the way when Kidd helds Tooveys dog in the pub they look like Tintin and Milo.

I watched this film the other day at night with earphones on knowing nothing about it..it was brilliant, they dont make em like this anymore.. I gotta admit that scene was pretty unnerving..

As I said in another thread. This scene terrified me when I saw it as a kid. But seeing it recently, it didn't seem like such a big deal. I had remembered her face looking a lot older and ghastly looking, but it looked relatively normal. I also had remembered the woman letting out an ear splitting scream , but it was little more then a subdued shriek. I guess it's just one of those things where certain key scenes of a movie are not at all what you remembered, several years later.

I remember it being a lot scarier when i was a kid, heh
But, the nursery scene was the most chilling, as was the bit when she appears behind him in the graveyard at the house.

                                          Well,.YES!
I've seen a lot of horror movies and I love the "creepy" ones - without much blood, cutting throats, torturing and stuff. It's boring and it can make you sick.
BUT, this scene made me cover my eyes for the first time in my life! When I was a child, my granny used to do that for me :))
(I must see it again though :D)
