You must be very young and ignorant so I'll excuse your lack of knowledge and understanding. This film was made back in the 1980s, so the ambulance would look like that, it wasn't like the square ambulances of today.
As for the vague ending, they obviously figured that the odds of the ambulance being fake again were so high against it that it would be near impossible. It's like surfers who get bitten by sharks, it doesn't stop them from surfing. Just because of one or more bad experiences that doesn't mean that all are bad, that's highly unlikely and you can't live your life based on the least likely of scenarios, then you wouldn't be able to do anything, period. It's a perfectly plausible scenario.

To the OP: That WAS a real ambulance. It was the ambulance of yesteryear. James Earl Jones' character makes mention of this in the film even. He says "This is one hell of an old ambulance."
We see one similar to it in "Ghostbusters": its the car they drive with the whiny siren.
"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush." -

My question is, right before the ambulance crashes through the wall into the pit, was that a toy ambulance!!!!
It definately looked like as it jumped that it was not the size of the real thing!!
Was that like a toy ambulance, or a model ambulance..!! I laughed at that!!!
No, it was definitely not a model or a toy. I don't know how anyone could come to such a conclusion. You can see Eric Roberts' stunt double in the same frame as it crashes. -

SPOILERS
There were 2 funny parts I liked in this comedy!! Which is what it felt like! Action packed comedy with an ambulance that was anything BUT an ambulance!!!
I loved it when Red Buttons(I love that unusual but funny name!) cocks that guy! Wham!!
I also love it when Eric Roberts goes jumping out of the ambulance while laying down strapped into the gurny after kicking the back door open. He kicks the door open with his feet while being strapped in to that gurny!!
And he goes flying out of the ambulance, and goes zipping down the road in the gurny into oncoming traffic!! All this time being strapped into the gurny lying on his back!!
I found that crazy funny!!
Also the very end with the guy and lady getting into the real ambulance. Did anyone else wonder if that real ambulance was fake as well?? I immediately wondered that!!! Those medics closing the door could have been fake too!!
The above you can also read in my previous thread I started!
Looked like the set-up to a sequal!! "The Ambulance Returns!"
And the quote that everyone already has mentioned many times already, but it's my turn because I heard it for the first time last night with my own ears::
"Don't worry pal. An Ambulance is on it's way!"
Then Eric Roberts goes "F- - - you! Just f- - - you!"
I found that a good come back line!

Wow the ignorance in this forum regarding this movie is astounding. It's not a comedy, it's a thriller, and the idea that inspired the theme is real, and I guarantee you there is nothing funny about that. People who find this funny are simply ignorant and don't know any better, either that or maybe you're stoned and will laugh at anything that's serious.
