Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums โ€” Back to the Future Part III

    spiritofsupergirl โ€” 10 years ago(October 22, 2015 05:13 PM)

Yesterday, when I was watching the trilogy at the local theater, everything was going fine. However, at Part III, I was surprised at two (apparent) acts of censorship:
After Marty throws the pie plate, he tells Buford: "Hey, lighten up, jerk!" His mouth clearly was not saying "jerk". I remember watching a VHS tape back in the day where he said "@$$hole". The theatrical version last night had this one instance changed to "jerk" (as the TV airing had back in the day), but all of the other curses were left intact.
When Marty's playing Dirty Harry in the mirror, after he says "Go ahead. Make my day.", it immediately cuts to the next scene. I remember a continuation of the scene (possibly another shot from a wider angle) where his pants and/or pajamas fell down, and you saw his butt.
I don't have the series on home video, so I can't verify anything. However, I have a theory. It's possible that the only time that I saw the film uncensored was at my friend Mike's house, when he put on a "screening cassette" that he got at the flea market. I have no idea what these things are or what there purpose was (I have one for "The Wizard"), but it's possible that it contained a slightly different cut of the film.
What are the DVD and Blu-ray releases like?

I've seen several releases. In every one of them he says "jerk".
I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested

Well, other reason that I think Marty's line was censored was because of Buford's confused reaction, followed by "Might strong words, runt." "Jerk" isn't a mighty strong word. "@$$hole" is, and it might have been uncommon enough (or unheard of) in 1885 that Buford got momentarily confused.
Also, regarding the pants falling down, it works as the punchline to the scene. Without it, Marty's just pretending to be a badass in the mirror, and then the scene just ends.
Also, when my friend Mike was over at my house one time, we watched my taped-off-TV VHS tape of Part III. After the mirror scene, Mike said "See, that was a cut. Originally, his pants fell down, and you saw his butt."

The joke is that he didn't understand ANY word in that sentence be it jerk or the phrase "lighten up"
he looked at his goons for clarification and they had no idea either so all he could think to say was "mighty strong words." It doesn't matter that A hole is stronger than jerk cause that's not the joke.
BTW it was always jerk. Marty calls Buford an a-hole later when he decides not to fight him in the street.

But when Buford was calling Marty out of the bar for the gunfight, Marty said "He's an a$$hole!" Nobody in the bar looked confused about what he said.
Perhaps the scene in question was changed to "jerk" because using the word "a$$hole" at the town festival in front of women and children might make Marty seem a bit crude in the eyes of the town folk?

Yes. That is the part I remember being censored. "A$$h013" was dubbed with "idiot" on the TV version for that bar scene. Also when Marty fakes out Needles at the end. "You think I'm stupid enough to race that'idiot'?"
But, after throwing the pie plate, I always remember it being "jerk."

I don't know about the censoured word, but I do remember something about Martys butt showing However I don't think it was ever IN the movie The home releases only have one deleted scene But there might be an extension or goof of that scene somewhere else in the bonus features Either that or we have both seen some other movie that had a seen like that in it lol

It's on TV now, and the butt shot is just one side of his pants being ripped, but it wasn't an explicit shot or full on. Kind of like someone ripped his right back pocket open a bit.

Marty is wearing a Union Suit and the right flap of his "access hatch" is unbuttoned. This happens before he plays Travis Bickle/Clint Eastwood in the mirror.

Right now I'm watching the 2005 DVD version of BttF pt.III and I played the "jerk" part in slow mo and if you look at Marty's mouth, it matches up with "jerk". If he did say beep then his lips would purse out a little on the "O" sound, but that didn't happen.
