Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Back to the Future Part III

I already covered some of this issue in a thread on the Part II board but this also got me to thinking. If Doc believes that nobody's future has been written yet and its determined by what you make of it then the whole plot of Doc taking Marty to 2015 to pose as his future son is a complete waste of time. All Doc had to do was warn Marty about October 21, 2015 and everything else could have been avoided.

Your comments only make sense if this were real people really time-traveling. Since they are not, and all this is fantasy fiction made for entertainment, you are just blowing hot air into a vacuum. The obvious reason it all happens the way it does is because the filmmakers figured it would be entertaining. Do you think it is entertaining? I do.

You seem to be under the illusion that Doc's normal.

Doc simply learns at the end of the trilogy that fixing the future starts in the here and now not going to the future to meddle.
Look let's just assume that fixing Marty's future by taking him to 2015 to stop Marty Jr taking part in that robbery makes logical sense, which of course it doesn't it's a movie but for the sake of argument let's say it does. Basically this is at a point in Doc's arc where he feels he needs to meddle with the events (or future history) to make things better.
The truth is that Marty's future was/is up to him and thats what Doc learns by the end of the trilogy. It's not meant to NEGATE the future plot of part 2 its meant to show that meddling with the future was not the correct solution.
After returning from 2015 Doc realises that time travel is irresponsible and risking all these paradoxes by taking Marty to the future was a huge miscalculation. By Part 3 all Doc wants is to destroy the Delorean and refuses to tell Marty too much about his car accident. He just tells him to make his future a good one.

I think it's kind of like Dorothy at the end of "The Wizard of Oz"she had to take the journey to understand that there's no place like home. For Doc, he had to travel in time all these years to understand that "the future isn't written yet."
If you're not taking any steps forward, you're not moving at all.

That's the point. It's called a character arc. It was intentional because part 2 and 3 were written together as one big movie.
Someone mentioned Dorothy in Wizard Of Oz which is a perfect example.

The future isn't written yet from the POV of the present. That said, you CAN travel into the future using the Delorean and you will end up seeing the most likely future which is 'real' to the people who've lived through it and to the time-traveler witnessing it.
