Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Class of 1999

i've just had a glance on the cast of this movie when i realized that there is Malcolm McDowell in it, the main person of the Stanley Kubrick classic "a clockwork orange".
I've already known that there is Pam Grier in it who has starred in the Tarantino-movie "Jackie Brown" some years later. I was told that she was quite a famous actress when she was younger and she also is quite successful again since she has starred as Jackie Brown.
By the way, the main person of the movie, Bradley Gregg, at least participated as some side character in Indiana Jones 3 which is also a classic.
Somehow I wonder that there were at least two really famous actors who agreed to participate in a b-movie like this. I mean, I like this movie the same as i like other Mark Lester movies because of their total lack of any deeper sense and because of the fact that they are not afraid of showing violence. those two things are something I miss in newer productions. Even an action no-brainer such as "Triple X" tries to teach you some morals and movies today are edited in any way just to get a lower age-rating (latest example: basic instinct 2). Those old 80s actioners gave a beep about those things, they just were produced for pure entertainment and that's why they did their purpose much better than those new action movies.
Anyway, as an actor, it won't really advance your career if you star in a that crappy produced movie. So I wonder what was the reason for Pam Grier and Malcolm McDowell to participate in this. I think that Pam Grier's career had a deadbeat before "Jackie Brown", but what about Malcolm McDowell, wasn't he too successful in the last few years or why did he star in this??

Some actors find it fun to try something new once in a while.

Don't forget the skillful acting of John P. Ryan & Patrick Kilpatrick. All-star cast all the way!

what about stacey keach. He and malcom mcdowell have never seemed to keep to the career path expected.

Or the always-unpredictable Jimmy Medina Taggert?

Pam Grier's career a "deadbeat"??? You obviously haven't heard of Pam Grier or a Blaxploitation film..

I think it's also funny that the original poster doesn't seem to realize that this movie came out in 1990.

of course i know, but still makes it an 80ies movie for me just because of the style. it probably also was produced still in 1989 and just released in 1990

I'm pretty sure everyone dug the script and the big names like Stacy Keach and Malcom McDowell were probably paid major bucks to act in this movie.

I was stunned at how good the cast was but not surprised by how crap thier performances were.
Stacey Keach & Malcolm Macdowell must have been crying themselves to sleep during this shoot.
And no I don't think they had bumper paydays for this either, it was direct to video in most countries.
Why quote other people when I like the sound of my own voice?

the cast is the main reason why this flick has CULT written all over it! Stacy Keach is sublime as the exaggeratedly eccentric robot-father, complete with dyed white hair and goofy contact lenses. Apart from the aforementioned Malcolm McDowell ("A Clockwork Orange") and Pam Grier ("Coffy"), "Class of 1999" also stars familiar cult faces John P. Ryan ("It's Alive"), Patrick Kilpatrick ("Under Siege 2") and Joshua Miller ("River's Edge").
