Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Die Hard 2

    deborahjwood — 9 years ago(May 21, 2016 03:48 AM)

Don't get me wrong I love the Die Hard movies even at their craziest most unbelievable but with so many explainable crashes in the news and TV series devoted to crashes and the dissection of the causes, the Die Hard consultants really could and should have played just a TAD closer to the rules as with the entire Die Hard series 30% of the stunts are just plain impossible in real life but in DH2 I found 2 that were particularly insulting to my limited flying intelligence (and if mine is extraordinarily limited they must have made more knowledgeable people just CRAZY) - first was a plane flying on fumes "dry as a martini" exploding in a roaring ball of flames much more akin to a plane fully loaded with fuel on take off, not landing. The second was when a 6'2" or 6'4" 230 - 250 lb grown man was sucked into the intake and the plane just kept humming along as though nothing had happened - when we've all seen planes knocked from the sky by a few geese - not even a FLOCK of them - although we've seen both engines knocked out by a flock, just a few birds can cripple a plane if not kill it so a man should have at least stopped one engine (or that would be my thought). I guess there is a third in that same scene - when the plane reached the turn around to begin the taxi for take off - it was airborne in a few hundred yards are you KIDDING US??? We've all been at the beginning of that taxi praying our asses off through take off and I am pretty sure I pray for AT LEAST a full 60 seconds and much much further than a couple of football fields and continue to pray from the time wheels are up til we are at umm at least 20,000 feet - long before cruising altitude but long AFTER those wheels leave the ground. It's been years since I've watched these but having made it through three of them tonight, I can live with the rest of the beep those were the only few that just yanked my crank a little too hard. STILL ALL IN ALL these great oldies rank high on my list of watchable action films - crazy as they are Willis is such a hysterical loose cannon it's hard NOT to love him!!!

Awesome post! You took the words right of many mouths that were wide open, jaws on the floor, at the sillyness regarding the far-fetched stuff here regarding the planes in this movie. Also, i know that a plane coming in for a landing must have quite a bit of space to land. They can't come in from the skies and land on a dime. The out-of-fuel planes coming in and landing right near eachother. These planes are huge passenger jets, not little Cessnas. When the credits start rolling, you see a screen shot of five planes sitting on the tarmac. They look very close together. You are right about the bird strikes with planes. A full grown goose can be what, 20 pounds or so, and they can disable a plane's engine quick. Grant was 250 lbs. and he gets sucked in the engine, but the engine hardly gets damaged. Turbine is still spinning at 12,000 RPM. No fire or flames or even smoke coming from it. I am no expert on fuel, and when flame comes in contact with it. I do find it totally far-fetched at just how fast the line of flame reaches the plane's engine after McClane throws his lit lighter at it. it would seem, with the cold weather, and the blizzardous conditions, that it would take a while longer for the line of fuel that was set aflame to reach the plane's engine.

I agree with your points, but there was an instance when a full grown man on the deck of an aircraft carrier was sucked into a A-6 Intruder intake and actually came out the other side without dying or losing a limb. The engine definitely flares out though.

A 747 has four engines and can still take off and fly if one of them stops working. They just would've switched off the engine that the guy got sucked into and carried on with the take off preparations. It's no problem. A 747 can even fly on one engine, in fact.
I guess there is a third in that same scene - when the plane reached the turn around to begin the taxi for take off - it was airborne in a few hundred yards
The plane takes a while to take off. When McClain ignites the fuel trail with his zippo, it shoots down the runway and a wide shot shows the plane in the distance. It actually takes a while for the plane to lift off.
We've all been at the beginning of that taxi praying our asses off through take off and I am pretty sure I pray for AT LEAST a full 60 seconds and much much further than a couple of football fields and continue to pray from the time wheels are up til we are at
This wasn't a commercial flight. It was an empty cargo plane full of terrorists who wanted to get airborne ASAP. They don't follow normal taxi and take off protocol for a busy airport. This airport in the film was empty. They flew on their own rules.

You are mistaking 'credulity' for 'credibility' in your statement.

Oh geez it's like a movie or something. If you think this strains credibility I shudder to think what you would say about die hard 4 and 5
