I have no problem with how DeNiro, Liotta, and Pesci looked in terms of physical appearance when it comes to weight, height, and muscle definition for that era. Most of those guys were not muscle builders or work out warriors. I remember when "reputed" mobsters made the local news back during the later golden age shown in the movie. Muscle guys were really nothing but big framed guys such as my wife's first cousin was who was an mob associate way back in the 1970's. A lot of times they did not need muscle as the people they dealt with knew that they carried guns and were willing to use them.

It comes down to the time and place that these guys operated in. The local mob was plenty intimidating for the time and neighborhoods that they operated in. I really do not get the comment about being white collar criminals when at least the local guys were into loansharking, bookmaking, and to a lesser degree prostitution and other sex related crimes (porn). Please explain your reasoning behind that and what white privilege has to do with it.

Other races in America would be banned, annihilated, or whatever if they did to the extent of what the Mob got away with. The truth is the mob like the klan became an institutional entity within the United States with extreme influence even to this day.

I agree with you somewhat. I disagree with annihilation but certainly would face more agressive law enforcement. But even that notion is complicated. The Italian crime families had to pay bribes all over the place to keep local law enforcement of their backs for many decades back in the 20th Century. This was in parallel with Italians being made second class citizens when they arrived which did not change until the 1960's as more and more Italians achieved upper education meaning college. So the mafia differs quite a bit from the Klan who does not have to pay officials off all over the place. I think that white privilege is way over stated in its effects here in the US. Quite a few white people dislike each other and assuming there is not intelligent rationals behind it then it falls along ethnic lines. When I was growing up I was the wrong kind of white to many of the other kids on the bus so I had to stand on the bus as nobody would let me sit. The fact is that white ethnic groups can slide backwards depending on world events. It took German-Americans quite a long time to rebound from the World Wars and it did not help that even though many renounced Hitler in their hearts as well as their speech that these same people were tarnished by a few idiots who let sympathy for the homeland to get mixed up with an evil regime. Some days I think we are closer to being cavemen than enlightened human beings.

Its not about being muscular or in tip top physical shape. back in the day these guys would literally pull out a gun and shoot you in the head if you pissed them off even a little..thats a bit intimidating.

Exactly. Some people these days just don't get it. They not only would shoot you, they would do the same things in the same ways that today's gang bangers do, except back then, they had better aim.
Where do people think the whole idea and practices of street gangs, drug cartels, and organized crime come from? They all learn how to bully, terrorize and kill others from the ones before them. Street gangs get tips on what to do and how to do it from their elders and bosses like the mob guys did. Their styles, their dress, their lingo are taught to them from the other people and elements from the underworld.
Fat, skinny, ugly, baby-faced, young or older, you can't tell by looking at their physiques how they will mess you up, kill you, or hide your body; just know they probably can. -

I'm willing to bet that the crews in the gang neighborhoods you were in don't even own any legit businesses to run a money-laundering scheme. They're the lowest denominator in the crime world where their only strength is intimidation through numbers.That's it.
Jimmy wasn't even a made guy but he had several different illegal enterprises operating in Paulie's territory that were making money for Paulie. MONEY is the POWER in the crime world and if Jimmy or Paulie wanted to 'wipe the floor' with your said gang they'd easily recruit another gang from a nearby neighborhood and probably arm them with better weapons.
