This score is a masterpiece. It's right up there with the best of Mozart, Debussy, and Bach.
I said in a previous thread how music is the most powerful tool to manipulate our emotions. This score has manipulated us into thinking Home Alone is a good movie. It is a decent movie, but apart from this score, it doesn't stand out as being anything special. The main reason this movie is so nostalgic around Christmas time is because of this music.
There are classic great films that have low-budget scores without an orchestra; for example, Terminator which was just played on a synthesizer and a drum machine, and Halloween which Carpenter did himself on a keyboard. The Godfather and Eyes Wide Shut had simple scores. These scores are iconic in their own right. But John Williams, on the other hand, was a big-budget composer who had an entire orchestra at his helm. Home Alone probably wouldn't have worked with a low-budget score using only 1-3 instruments. It needed that John Williams touch.
And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane
By those who could not hear the music.
