In the trivia section, he states that it was the worst experience of his life.
Watching him onscreen, its clear that he's trying to take the role and film seriously.but the others are just having to much fun. And his discomfort is all to obvious.
He's a fine actor.but he should lighten up a little. -

Actually, I f'd up on that one. Biehn made a movie in 1991 called K2 which was actually pretty good, and MB gave a nice performance in it. The Rock was terrible but Biehn was okay (even though his character, like any other in a Bay movie, is simply a prop to get from A to B and has no real presence other than to get wasted in an overblown, over stylized shoot out).
To answer the OP, Biehn is taking the role seriously but his character is meant to be that way (the opposite of Sheen's adrenaline hound). He only said it was the worst experience of his life because he felt that with the whole set up which included full cooperation of the Navy and an (at the time) A-list cast, that it could've and should've been a lot better. Basically, he thought it was a waste of talent and resources. I agree to a certain extent, as the tone is messed up (which Biehn mentions in the interview especially with Sheen's antics) and they didn't know whether to make it an action-comedy or a gritty film.
I still don't think this movie is bad at all. I've seen much worse, especially in the same kind of theme as this. Biehn and Sheen make it worthwhile, and the action scenes are well done.

I haven't seen K2 in quite some time, but I seem to remember thinking Biehn's character came off as a massive toolbag. Funnily enough, The Rock is one of my favorite action movies. To each their own I guess.
But I agree about NS. It's a solid and underrated movie that isn't meant to be taken seriously. And it's amusing to see Biehn play yet another SEAL. -

He was indeed a toolbag, but at the end he was prepared to stay with his wounded friend on the mountaintop because he couldn't take leaving him to die alone. I thought the acting in that scene was very powerful, and I almost choked up watching it (I've honestly never cried at a movie before).

It definitely is. It also has a (subtle) emotional core which is what keeps it going for me and surprised me a bit. You've got all the corny one liners and 80s rock anthems, but you've also got characters that have some actual worth to them. The scene in the parking lot where Curran (Biehn) essentially blames Sheen for their friend's death is very well done, surprisingly so. On top of that it's a fun, innocent movie that doesn't pretend to be anything more than what it is. People are too cynical when it comes to films like this and can't see the forest for the trees.
Also, if they made a film about Navy Seals now I doubt it'd be anywhere near as good as this one.
ps I loved seeing Sorsha from Willow, too. Shame she never became a big star, was a good actress.
