Because sometimes he acted like he was on Xayide's side and then the next minute he was trying to help Bastian or so it seemed. Can somebody tell me.

He started out as Xayide's lackey, but later had a change of heart when he realized the devastating harm that he was causing Bastian.

I agree with the above statement.
He starts off being the villan, but redeems himself toward the end by helping Bastian.
