I was actually coming here to say something about this.
They could've at least just cut the beep before that awful scene.
    That kid was the worst.
    UGH!

I have watched this movie so many times now, but I always have to stop it just as Seth starts running away from Cam/Dolphin's body. The ending seriously kills the brilliance of the entire movie for me. I can't determine whether it's the bad acting, the actual howling/crying, or the overly dramatic hand motions (like tearing up the ground and letting dirt sift through his raised hands etc) that make it so unbearably awful, but either way it sucks that such a great film is potentially ruined for many people because of its silly ending.

Then he would have been going for a ride in a car that did not exist. The car and occupants did not exist. We first see them get gas that they did not pay for. They were not there. They were the imagination of a mentally ill boy. Seth did all the killing. That part was very clear. Some of the whack jobs in the movie were not so clear. Such as the two girls that seemed to be making pigeon noises. what the hell was that?

Yes, the car and its occupants are clearly in his imagination, it's like he can make them appear whenever he wants to. I have watched a lot of movies with fictional characters and it seemed pretty clear cut to me.
                  Very depressing movie..

I watched this film for the first time last night, and I loved the ending. I really related to the film. It reminded me of my childhood (sneaking in places, pulling mean pranks, fascinated by the supernatural, always confronting the death of a loved one), and in general, the darker moments of my life. I can tell you there have been a number of times that I wanted to just run away from it all and scream. Like everything in this movie, it seems strange, yet rings true.

It's disapointing if you expect a "normal" ending, ie: one about the murders investigation. But once you realize the movie is about the end of childhood, it all makes sense: the kid screaming in the field = him realised he is no more a child with all his fantasy (vampires, angels, imaginary friend/foetus etc.), but a grown-up in a real, hard life.
Remember the scene just before when Dolphin told him about the end of innocence and that he's lucky to still be a child

How can Seth get in the car when the car is in his head? Those teens and the car are his feelings.
