Terminator is not in the same league. There is nothing in the terminator movies as relentless and determined as cady.

Robert Mitchum's portrayal was much more intimidating. Robert De Niro over does it in this.

The funny thing is, in Sidney Lumet's 1990 film "Q & A" Nick Nolte as crooked cop Mike Brennan is waaaaaay scarier and crazier than DeNiro as Max Cady.
Max wouldn't have lasted a round opposite to Nolte's Brennan.

Mitchum made it one of the best villains ever.

While it was a generally entertaining performance and movie, I can't possibly compare his character to other villains in cinema history. He got very repetitive with his Bible quotes and other sayings, and he was absolutely over-the-top. I didn't care much for the accent, and also prefer Bobby D. in roles other than an antagonist.

For a serious thriller Cady was way too indestructible. He's a ridiculous character and De Niro plays him so over the top he's nothing but a cartoon.
Was it a millionaire who said "Imagine no possessions"?

I also agree and was thinking the same thing De Niro's portrayal of Max Cady might not only be his best performance but one of the best on screen villains of all time.
His character is very interesting. He was a self-admitting piece of "white trash" that educated himself in prison to no longer be a stereotype and become a messenger of death.

                      Hey, I'm with ya OP.
One of the best. I loved DeNiro in this. Brilliant. Scary as hell.
The bedroom assault did it for me:
He breaks her arm. BITES and takes a CHUNK out of her FACE. Spits it out. "I gotcha now, bitch!" And proceeds to beat the sh!t out of her.
                      Brutal.
                      "Yyyuuplotta history down that road."

I disagree, I think that the Best Villain ever is "Darth Vader".
