I hated this version of the movie. Bad acting, annoying characters, too much drama - it literally went overboard. Douglas was the best thing about it, so that's not saying much!

I don't think it's a good movie. Like you said, everything is overdone. Scorsese blows up a relatively simple tale. He tries to give it extra dimensions, but I don't think he succeeds. Nick Nolte gives an annoying performance, Jessica Lange gives one or her rare bad performance and Robert DeNiro gives a ridiculous performance. Parts of it are scary, I suppose, but all in all, I can't take any of it seriously.
Douglas was okay, but her character kind of got on my nerves. For me, the best thing about the movie is Juliette Lewis, who is wonderfully natural and self-assured. The nuances of speech and expression are very exciting to watch. Her performance totally outclasses the rest of the movie.

                  I'm a Juliette Lewis Fan
My step sister saw this movie and said that Illeana looked just like me so I was curious to see it after that
                  We had the same hairstyle

                    Yeah, I love Juliette Lewis.
And years before Juliette even began making movies, I really liked her dad, Geoffrey Lewis. He was soooooo cute! He could be funny, too.
I'd like to think they were close as father and daughter.
I liked Illeana's hairstyle in CF. But she said something to the RD character that was pretty condescending/demeaning and he got this look on his face (she wouldn't have picked up in it as she was already pretty drunk) and at that moment I knew something pretty terrible was in store for her.

                        I don't think it's a good movie….everything is overdone.
I was very much looking forward to viewing this movie, but it was just bombastic and frustrating.
How De Niro got an Oscar nom for his ott and comic book portrayal is dumbfounding. Nolte is horrid, Lange has nothing to do, except play the long suffering wife and is completely wasted, and Douglas was annoying like the rest of the presentation.
Its quite visual in parts, but style does not equate to substance.
the best thing about the movie is Juliette Lewis, who is wonderfully natural and self-assured. The nuances of speech and expression are very exciting to watch. Her performance totally outclasses the rest of the movie.
Yes, Lewis is the saving grave here and really the only sole redeeming feature and reason to watch. Her nomination was thoroughly deserved. Scorsese has always been hit and miss for me and much of that is to do with his arrogance.
Norman! What did you put in my tea?

Regarding Martin Scorsese, I loved "Mean Streets" to pieces. And "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" is in my the top 15 favorite movies. Largely due to Ellen Burstyn's vibrant performance and the vital, incisive screenplay by Robert Getchell. I thought "Taxi Driver" was a good movie, even if I'm not as big a fan of the movie as many others.
I can't express how much I loathe "Raging Bull". I don't understand how so many people think it's some kind of masterpiece. It is shallow beyond belief. I believe it is
                          intentionally
shallow. I will never forget Pauline Kael's assessment of the movie as having the substance of a potato. All starch.
The world needs another Pauline Kael.

It's easy for me to forget
                              Alice….
is a Scorsese film. I think of Burstyn first and her character's situation.
Woke up on a dream about her this morning. It was very very interesting. Will pm you later.
                              Still need to see
                              Mean Streets
                              .
                              Taxi Driver
is a classic, but I need to be in the mood. It is not readily watchable for me due to its grimness.
                              Raging Bull
, has been given nothing but bull hype and it is bamboozling.
I would also say many fanboys of Scorsese who love
                              Taxi
                              ,

                              Goodfellas
                              ,
                              Departed
                              ,
                              Wolf..
etc type of film, would also be the ass acne basement dweller incel types that would dismiss Scorsese's more intimate works like
                              Alice…
                              ,
                              King Of Comedy
                              and

I like "After Horus" actually. I was walking past the Music Box theater in Chicago, maybe 5 years ago and poked my nose in to see what was playing and it was "After Hours". It was starting in 20 minutes and I had nothing else to do and so I decided I wanted to see it. I loved the premise and I found the movie to be funny and enjoyable. Teri Garr and her mousetraps were a hoot!

                                  After Hours
, from the first time I saw it at the cinema. It was perhaps the first Scorsese film I had seen. I may have seen Alice on t.v, but I wasn't aware at the time of the director.
