I could not believe what I was seeing when I saw this. Especially the 2nd half. Completely over the top and cartoony. As soon as the father contaminated the murder seen and basically rolled around in the blood I turned my brain off and suffered through the rest of the movie. What was Scorcese thinking? The first half was at least mildly interesting but De Niro no selling getting beaten with lead pipes, holding on to the underside of a car for 50 miles and then no selling fire, and the father being a complete idiot smh Atrocious.

Why do so many people on here call Martin Scorsese Martin Scorcese? Is this just a bizarrely frequently made mistake? You're far from the only one so I'm not saying anything about you, but I am genuinely interested. Why?
These are the only words I have, I'm stuck with them, stuck in them

Well, the OP also says "murder seen" and goes on to say "no selling beaten" and "no selling fire" (whatever the hell those phrases are supposed to mean), so maybe it's all about consistency.

"Selling" is a wrestling term. It basically means you acting like your opponents moves hurt to 'put over' the fact that your opponent is strong and dangerous. Thus "no-selling" means completely ignoring your opponents offense as if you are not affected by it which makes your opponent look weak. So when I say De Niro no sold getting beaten and the fire I mean immediately after it ended he was completely unaffected which is entirely unrealistic and stupid.
Spelling errors aside, everything I said is true. The first half of this movie was a least slightly interesting and intriguing but the 2nd half fell of the cliff and movie became a cartoon. Implausible and stupid. Waste of time.

But this movie actually was a box-office hit. Isn't that the main goal in film-making? Maybe Marty was hurt by the middling box-office take of "Goodfellas", and figured he would go for something that played like a ham-fisted B-movie. Ironically enough, "Cape Fear" made more money than "Goodfellas", so maybe his instincts - at least in terms of box office - were right on.

              Unbelievable. Goodfellas was a masterpiece.
Cape Fear should never have been remade. Did they think DeNiro could do better than Robert Mitchum? Robert DeNiro is a great actor, of course. But his Max Cady was cartoony.
Maybe this idea came to Scorsese during his coke period. Nick Nolte in the Gregory Peck role? No way. Jessica Lange (love her) seemed almost not even there.
What next, remake Night of the Hunter? Leave these wonderful black and white films for us to continue to enjoy and force our kids to watch.

It is if you are selling cereal or mcdonald's burgers. Not if you are making films. At least not if you are serious about making good and honest films.
The only thing box office says about a film is how many people viewed it. Not how good it is.
