I grew up watching him play gentle benevolent characters.
I have never seen "Goodfellas".
So it was a surprise seeing him play a villain.
I thought he was really good! I felt he made the film what it was. His performance as a dangerous psychopath made the film good for me. -

Travis Bickle isn't a bad guy though,
he became a vigilante and went in to kill those pimps and drug dealers so he could rescue Iris so she could have a normal life
.
Thats what i love about these high school girls, i get older they stay the same age. -

I bet many fans (including yours truly) grew up watching him play a few crazy bastards; the image of De Niro as a tough guy is something that's just ingrained in many film fan's mind. Nowadays though, it's more likely younger audiences are used to seeing him play gentler characters, so it'll certainly be a surprised when they first see him in some of his older films.
By the way, if you want to check out his other meaner roles, I recommend u watch Raging Bull (one of his most famous), Mean Streets, Angel Heart, The Untouchables, This Boy's Life, and of course, Goodfellas. And yeah, he was terrific as an over-the-top psycho in Cape Fear.
You want something corny? You got it!
